Prepare by having USD on hand and Shillings, it is possible to exchange USD for shillings in Tanzania and you may use your card at the atm.

  • What should I pack?

With local customs it is the respectful thing to dress conservatively when in Tanzania. Otherwise dress light and comfortable. Bring yourself good hiking footwear and the nights do cool off so it's nice to have a sweater or light jacket.

Women are best recieved in shirts covering their shoulders, shorts below the knees, wrap or skirt, or pants.

Men, loose pants and a collard shirt.

There is no bad time to travel East Africa

    Dry season (June to October)

    • Best for: Wildlife viewing, especially the annual migration in Serengeti National Park.
    • Other notes: This is peak tourist season with higher rates.

  • Do I need to Tip?

Not obligatory, but a tip for exceptional service would be appreciated. Here are some general ranges of tipping per person per day / per vehicle

    • Number of people in a vehicle / Tipping guideline

    • 6 people / $10 to $15 per person per day

    • 4 people / $12 to $20 per person per day

    • 2 people / $15 to $25 per person per day

If you are on a camping safari, it is felt that your cook should be tipped in similar measure to your safari guide (as they work as a team). At most lodges/camps there is a tip box at the front desk. We recommend that you use the tip box instead of tipping individuals so that everyone who made your experience enjoyable can share, even those behind the scenes.

    Tipping on Mount Kilimanjaro

Your Kilimanjaro crew works incredibly hard to help you reach the summit safely and comfortably — from the guides who lead the way to the porters who carry equipment and prepare camp each day. While tipping is always at your discretion, it is customary and very much appreciated.

    How and When to Tip

At the end of your climb, you’ll enjoy a lunch celebration with your mountain crew after descending from the mountain. This is the appropriate and most natural time to express your appreciation and present your group’s tip.

To make the process simple and transparent:

    • You’ll receive a tipping table sheet listing the number of people in each crew role (guide, cook, porters, etc.) and the number of climbing days.

    • You can fill in how much you’d like to give per person per day for each role, then calculate the total and place that amount (in U.S. dollars or Tanzanian shillings) in an envelope.

    • Hand the envelope to your lead guide at the end-of-climb lunch/celebration. The team will divide the total among themselves according to their established system.

We’ll provide you with the exact number of crew members on your climb ahead of time, so all you need to do is fill in your chosen daily amount for each role and total it up.

  • Do I need to know Swahili?

It is not necessary to know Swahili as most Tanzanian people speak English, in the villages there may be very little English though our guides are fluent.

Some helpful greetings that are common are:

"Mambo" (what's up) - "poa" (cool)

"Vipi" (hows it going) -"poa" or "sawa" or "safi" (ok/clean/good)

"Habari" (how are things) - "Nzuri" or "Salama" ( good/peaceful/fine)

    "Habari za asubuhi" (morning greeting)

    "Habari za mchana" (afternoon greeting)

    "habari za jioni" (evening greeting)

"Shikamoo" ( respectful greeting to an elder) - "Marahaba" (respectful reply)

Project Zawadi
Once upon a time, there was a young man named Brian, who met some young brothers without parents, while on mission work in Tanzania. One of those boys was Ismail, now director of Kick & Roar Adventures. Brian helped these boys get through school, starting the wonderful non-profit organization Project Zawadi. The project now helps many children in Tanzania! We stand by this project and it's authenticity with proof of the amazing work they do in our own Ismail Mataso.
