Not obligatory, but a tip for exceptional service would be appreciated. Here are some general ranges of tipping per person per day / per vehicle
Number of people in a vehicle / Tipping guideline
6 people / $10 to $15 per person per day
4 people / $12 to $20 per person per day
2 people / $15 to $25 per person per day
Tips can be paid for at the end of the journey or before.
If you are on a camping safari, it is felt that your cook should be tipped in similar measure to your safari guide (as they work as a team). At most lodges/camps there is a tip box at the front desk. We recommend that you use the tip box instead of tipping individuals so that everyone who made your experience enjoyable can share, even those behind the scenes.
Your Kilimanjaro crew works incredibly hard to help you reach the summit safely and comfortably — from the guides who lead the way to the porters who carry equipment and prepare camp each day. While tipping is always at your discretion, it is customary and very much appreciated.
How and When to Tip
At the end of your climb, you’ll enjoy a lunch celebration with your mountain crew after descending from the mountain. This is the appropriate and most natural time to express your appreciation and present your group’s tip.
To make the process simple and transparent:
You’ll receive a tipping table sheet listing the number of people in each crew role (guide, cook, porters, etc.) and the number of climbing days.
You can fill in how much you’d like to give per person per day for each role, then calculate the total and place that amount (in U.S. dollars or Tanzanian shillings) in an envelope.
Hand the envelope to your lead guide at the end-of-climb lunch/celebration. The team will divide the total among themselves according to their established system.
We’ll provide you with the exact number of crew members on your climb ahead of time, so all you need to do is fill in your chosen daily amount for each role and total it up.
It is not necessary to know Swahili as most Tanzanian people speak English, in the villages there may be very little English though our guides are fluent.
Some helpful greetings that are common are:
"Mambo" (what's up) - "poa" (cool)
"Vipi" (hows it going) -"poa" or "sawa" or "safi" (ok/clean/good)
"Habari" (how are things) - "Nzuri" or "Salama" ( good/peaceful/fine)
"Habari za asubuhi" (morning greeting)
"Habari za mchana" (afternoon greeting)
"habari za jioni" (evening greeting)
"Shikamoo" ( respectful greeting to an elder) - "Marahaba" (respectful reply)
Your welcome book will also have a list of sayings and pronouniation for you
You are in safe hands. Tanzania is a stable country with highly develped eco-tourism sectors, they love their tourists and value taking good care of them. But like anywhere you may go, there is petty theft to be warry of. Keep your personal items on you and safe at all times outside the safari vehicle and only take your phone out when you need to.

Across these protected landscapes, Tanzania supports an extraordinary diversity of animals. Massive herds of wildebeest and zebra roam the plains during the Great Migration, while elephants, lions, leopards, and giraffes thrive in ecosystems that remain largely untouched. From the baobab-dotted savannas of Tarangire National Park to the endless grasslands of the Serengeti, the country offers a true sense of wild Africa.
With its commitment to conservation and its incredible abundance of wildlife, Tanzania stands as one of the last great natural strongholds where nature still rules—and where every safari feels like stepping into a living documentary.
